Aalto-Oper
Music theatre and humane architecture, built in 1988
Built to the plans of Alvar Aalto from the 1950s, the theatre was completed in 1988. The Aalto-Theater is not only an impressive music theatre with 1,125 seats but also a special architectural landmark and a work of art in itself. The organic-shaped structure – resembling a rock or a tree stump – is elegantly integrated into the surrounding Stadtgarten (city park), where sculptures by Ulrich Rückriem can be admired. Inside the building natural materials such as horsehair, leather and the wooden floor as well as the white and blue colours intensify the building's organic and humane character. Visitors from all over Germany appreciate the high artistic standard of this theatre with its outstanding ensemble and orchestra.
