Haus am Theaterplatz
Theatre arcade, built between 1928 and 1930
This five-storey, multifunctional brickwork building was built to the plans of architects Georg Metzendorf and building officer, Mr Scheider, in the cubist style and with strict geometrical forms. Today, only the façade of the long building has remained almost unchanged. Originally, Haus am Theaterplatz housed the headquarters of Stadtsparkasse (City Savings Bank) and the then Haus der Technik (House of Technology). Since September 2005, the youth theatre "Casa" and the "Box" – an experimental venue for various musical events and readings – have been on the top floor. The ground floor has had a 4,500 m² shopping arcade as well as various cafés and restaurants since the 1980s.
