Museum Folkwang

World-famous art collection of the 19 and 20th centuries

The Folkwang Museum houses an art collection of world renown. The impressive new museum building was completed in time for the Capital of Culture Year 2010 according to plans by David Chipperfield. Previously, van Gogh, Gaugin and Cézanne attracted art lovers to Essen from all over the world. The Folkwang museum is one of the most famous German museums of art. The collection provides an almost complete overview of German and French painting and sculpture of the 19th and 20th centuries. It includes some 600 paintings and 280 pictures, sculptures and objets d’art. The photographic collection, which was integrated into the museum in 1979, is also unique.
