Philharmonie/Saalbau

Concert hall steeped in tradition, built in 1904

This tradition-steeped building was constructed by Neckelmann in 1904 and has been the home of Essen’s philharmonic orchestra since 2004. Saalbau was reconstructed by architect Engelhardt from 1950 to 1954. After extensive conversion and interior work by architects Busmann and Haberer, the philharmonic hall with its outstanding acoustics is today one of Germany’s best multifunctional concert halls. Technical highlight: Thanks to a spiral lifting system, the floor can be moved and therefore adapted to suit specific requirements. The Alfried-Krupp-Saal (Alfried Krupp hall) can hold 1,900 visitors. The glass RWE pavilion (350 seats) offers an excellent stage for jazz, chamber music and matinee performances. On the terrace, you can admire sculptures by Thomas Schütte.
