Ruhrhöhen / Kruppwald

During its development into a metropolis, the cultivation of wooded areas has always been part of Essen’s urban planning. But most tourists and visitors have no idea that Essen is a green city.  However, one third is made up of nature conservation areas and around 1,600 hectares are wooded areas – that is no less than 30 m² per inhabitant. For example, the Krupp forest extends down to the Baldeneysee (Lake Baldeney) and other woods such as Stadtwald and Heissiwald adjoin it. It offers space for local recreation and sporting activities and is a wonderful starting point for long walks into the surrounding areas, for example to Lake Baldeney or the district of Werden.
