Steag-Zentrale

Steag head office, built between 1956 and 1960

The building is an impressive structure and a typical example of Egon Eiermann’s functional architecture. His works include the new Gedächtniskirche (Memorial Church) in Berlin and the "Langer Eugen" building in Bonn. In Essen, Eiermann based his design of the building on square and rectangular forms, positioning two cubes at right angles to each other. In the 1980s the building was slightly altered by architect Helmut Kohl. A 4-metre sculpture, "Dynamik", by the Romanian artist Ladis Schwartz is situated on the green area in front of the building. By the way, you can catch a glimpse of the original office furniture from the time of Konrad Adenauer through the windows of the offices facing Rüttenscheider Straße.
