Villa Hügel / Hügelpark
Family residence of the Krupp dynasty
The Villa Hügel with its 269 rooms is located right in the middle of Hügel park. Germany’s largest "single-family home" was used until 1945 by three Krupp generations for representation purposes and as a residence. Inside the classic mansion in the Wilhelminian style – far from the noise and dirt of Krupp’s factories – you can not only admire a collection of tapestries and paintings but also a ceiling fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Art exhibitions are regularly held at Villa Hügel. A permanent exhibition documents the history of the Krupp family and the life of the Krupp workers as well as the current activities of the company and the Krupp Foundation. Hügel park has remained almost unchanged since 1914 and is one of Essen’s natural monuments, not only because of its redwood trees.
